Industrial Machine Basics - Sewing Salon - this is a NEW program @ TSL and is part of a 40 week course offered to give in depth training in sewing using Industrial Straight needle machines and limited exposure to Industrial serger machines. If you are signing up for this course you are agreeing to up to 40 weeks of instruction including ; Industrial sewing, Domestic Sewing and Entrepreneurial training. You will have multiple classes during the week with a combination of in person and Virtual and homework is expected. In addition you will have the opportunity to be exposed to local Kansas City companies using sewing in their business thru site tours, online job fairs and possible internships. Students will also be exposed to "live sewing products" so that you get a true understanding of the expectation of sewing in a real job situation. Scholarships and student stipends are available for those who qualify.

Industrial course consists of; In-person Industrial Machine Sewing - Monday & Thursday - 1:30 - 4:30,
Entrepreneurial Virtual on Tuesdays (can be viewed online) and Domestic machine course to follow

Basic Sewing - Phase 1 - This course if for a beginner who has never sewn before or for someone who has not sewn for awhile and needs a refresher course. You will learn to operate a domestic sewing machine including threading, basic operation and safety & maintenance. You will also learn the tools of the trade and add the building block skills of sewing seams, hems, finishes, zippers and more while making some simple projects. Each week you will learn a new skill and you will have home practice work to complete. At the end of this course you can earn a certification thru testing. This course is also part of our Sewing Salon program - for employment, entrepreneurship and enrichment.

This course will be lead by Robert Lackie - Classroom Instructor for Domestic machine.

All materials and supplies are included with this course. You can use our machines & tools or bring your own to learn with.

This course will get you back to sewing and then you can continue to more courses for additional certificates or just for self enrichment.

Garments & Garments - Learn to sew with commercial patterns. Participants sign up for a 6 week block of classes (if you miss a week you can make them up). Re sign up for as many 6 week blocks as you want as you continue to grow your skills..

Class covers;
* pattern & fabric selection
* proper garment sizing
* pattern layout and instructions tips
* cutting marking and more

You will select and bring a pattern to sew based on your skill set. Wait to purchase pattern until after first class.
Fabric selection can be from our stash or bring your own.
Then construct your garment with step by step mentor ship by instructors.
This class contains students at different levels of sewing skills. This allows you to see many different types of garment construction - learning from each others challenges.

This course is NOT a job skills certification course but give you complete information to be successful with garment sewing.

Open Sew is a time for you to come together to enjoy sewing on your own projects in The Sewing Labs. Bring your own sewing machine or use one of ours (first come, first serve) Use our tools & stash to practice your sewing skills or start a project or bring a UFO project to work. NO INSTRUCTION IS OFFERED - YOU MUST HAVE SEWING EXPERIENCE! but, volunteers are available for simple help. Domestic machines are available - NO Industrial machines offered.
Due to COVID restrictions - this is limited to 5 sewists - PRE- REGISTRATION IS RECOMMENDED - if we have reached our capacity - you will be turned away.

Pencil Skirt – Pattern Drafting by Cali Roberta
This class is part of our pattern drafting series.

In this class you will draft your custom fit pencil skirt and then make one to fit.
Skirt elements include self-lining and zipper closure.

Join us during Open Sew time to Sew a simple project -
Cloth Napkins - just in time for the holidays

This is a simple project to try out your interest in sewing or to just start and finish in one setting.
Kid or beginner friendly - all materials provided or your can bring your own fabrics (1/2yd = 3 napkins)

In this class you’ll learn the Japanese art of Itajime (fold and clamping.). It’s one of many techniques under the umbrella of Shibori, which mean shape resist dyeing. Ann Greenleaf, your instructor will lead you thru this workshop creating beautiful textiles that you can then use in garments, accessories, home decor and more. Ann vast experience in teaching these techniques include workshops for Hallmark
Shibori is a Japanese term for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, or compressing it.

We’ll explore many ways to fold fabric and clamp it between shapes to create patterns. The shapes can be wood blocks, plexiglass pieces, clothes pins, etc. Anything that will hold the folded fabric and create a resist for the dye.

Indigo dye baths will be mixed ahead of class but instructions will be given so students can learn how to mix Procion MX dyes if they want to pursue Shibori on their own.
Students will learn how to set and rinse their finished pieces.

This is a one session orientation which will give you an overview of the mission of The Sewing Labs and how you can serve as a volunteer.

Orientations will be held virtually via Zoom. We require all volunteers to attend orientation within their first 90 days. Pre-registration is requested. Even if you aren't a volunteer, we would love for you to become a TSL "Amba-sew-dor". We rely on our ambassadors to spread the word about our mission. Basic Sewing - Phase 1 - This course if for a beginner who has never sewn before or for someone who has not sewn for awhile and needs a refresher course. You will learn to operate a domestic sewing machine including threading, basic operation and safety & maintenance. You will also learn the tools of the trade and add the building block skills of sewing seams, hems, finishes, zippers and more while making some simple projects. Each week you will learn a new skill and you will have home practice work to complete. At the end of this course you can earn a certification thru testing. This course is also part of our Sewing Salon program - for employment, entrepreneurship and enrichment.

This course will be lead by Robert Lackie - Classroom Instructor for Domestic machine.

All materials and supplies are included with this course. You can use our machines & tools or bring your own to learn with.

This course will get you back to sewing and then you can continue to more courses for additional certificates or just for self enrichment.

Pencil Skirt – Pattern Drafting by Cali Roberta
This class is part of our pattern drafting series.

In this class you will draft your custom fit pencil skirt and then make one to fit.
Skirt elements include self-lining and zipper closure.
Materials for class as chosen from our stash or bring your own. Supply list given at registration.

Industrial Machine Basics - Sewing Salon - this is a NEW program @ TSL and is part of a 40 week course offered to give in depth training in sewing using Industrial Straight needle machines and limited exposure to Industrial serger machines. If you are signing up for this course you are agreeing to up to 40 weeks of instruction including ; Industrial sewing, Domestic Sewing and Entrepreneurial training. You will have multiple classes during the week with a combination of in person and Virtual and homework is expected. In addition you will have the opportunity to be exposed to local Kansas City companies using sewing in their business thru site tours, online job fairs and possible internships. Students will also be exposed to "live sewing products" so that you get a true understanding of the expectation of sewing in a real job situation. Scholarships and student stipends are available for those who qualify.

Industrial course consists of; In-person Industrial Machine Sewing - Monday & Thursday - 1:30 - 4:30,
Entrepreneurial Virtual on Tuesdays (can be viewed online) and Domestic machine course to follow
