Industrial Machine Basics - Sewing Salon - this is a NEW program @ TSL and is part of a 40 week course offered to give in depth training in sewing using Industrial Straight needle machines and limited exposure to Industrial serger machines. If you are signing up for this course you are agreeing to up to 40 weeks of instruction including ; Industrial sewing, Domestic Sewing and Entrepreneurial training. You will have multiple classes during the week with a combination of in person and Virtual and homework is expected. In addition you will have the opportunity to be exposed to local Kansas City companies using sewing in their business thru site tours, online job fairs and possible internships. Students will also be exposed to "live sewing products" so that you get a true understanding of the expectation of sewing in a real job situation. Scholarships and student stipends are available for those who qualify.

In this 3 hour class students will learn simple Shibori/tie dye techniques to create resist patterns on socks and lounge/pajama pants.
Indigo dye baths will be pre-mixed at the start of class but other colors will be available and students will learn how to mix dye.
Students will be responsible for bringing cotton socks and/or pants to class.

This is a one session orientation training which will give you an overview of the mission of The Sewing Labs and how you can serve as a volunteer.
Orientation will cover;the mission of TSL, the opportunities for volunteers from the classroom to community to boardroom, rules of operation and safety precautions for everyone in the program and more. We want you to do what you heart & hands love.
Even if you are just interested in finding out more before deciding to volunteer this is a great opportunity to explore what The Sewing Labs is all about.
All of our volunteers are expected to go thru an orientation within the first 90 days of service Pre-registration is requested.

Industrial Sewing Machine Rental –
Do you need an Industrial machine to take your sewing business to the next level but can’t yet make this investment? You can rent an Industrial Straight needle or serger machine @ The Sewing Labs. Industrial machines are meant for production or entrepreneurial sewing.
** Pre-requisite of Industrial Operator Classes is required – offered monthly ***

Basic Sewing - Phase 1 - This course if for a beginner who has never sewn before or for someone who has not sewn for awhile and needs a refresher course. You will learn to operate a domestic sewing machine including threading, basic operation and safety & maintenance. You will also learn the tools of the trade and add the building block skills of sewing seams, hems, finishes, zippers and more while making some simple projects. Each week you will learn a new skill and you will have home practice work to complete. At the end of this course you can earn a certification thru testing. This course is also part of our Sewing Salon program - for employment, entrepreneurship and enrichment.
This course will be lead by Robert Lackie - Classroom Instructor for Domestic machine.
