This is an exclusive workshop only held once before Fran returns to Chile
Fran is an innovative clothing designer using repurposed clothing to recreate fashion and accessories.
Workshop 1: Experimental recycling
- This workshop consists of the re-utilization of multiple garments through the upcycling technique in order to create a Kimono. The students only need to bring the clothes they no longer use to the class, and we will brainstorm color and textures palettes to define the aesthetic of the design outcome.
In two sessions, we will recycle, design and construct a kimono made out of unwanted clothes. The more clothes the student brings, the more possibilities of design we will have.

The students only need to bring the clothes they no longer use to the class, and we will brainstorm color and textures palettes to define the aesthetic of the design outcome.
In two sessions, we will recycle, design and construct a kimono made out of unwanted clothes. The more clothes the student brings, the more possibilities of design we will have.

Are you a Sewn Product Professional looking to "find your people" Sew Connected is a face-to-face meet up were we gather for FREE to build conversations and connection about our industry. Each month we gather for coffee and a short talk about what is important to us and supporting the Industry of Sewing Professionals.
What is a "Sewing Professional"? We define it as the following groups, but, if you think we left someone out - Let us know!
* Sewn Product Professional - Cut & Sew Manufacturers, Factories, Micro-factories, Custom Sewist - person/businesses being hired to sew a product in relationship to textiles like; fashion or clothing, accessories, home goods and more.
* Designers - product designers using textiles or fiber as their medium. This could include Fashion Designer, Surface Pattern Designers, Product designer.
* Supplies/Vendor - Businesses that sell the supplies needed to create the items listed above - typically wholesalers. Possible shop owners.
While we welcome most everyone - Professional Persons within the Sewing Industry is the focus. We are building this community of talented people who are eager to share and collaborate to rise each other up

SEW POWERFUL PURSE taught by Chris McMullen – Sew Powerful, a non-profit organization, asks seamstresses from around the world to make and donate a purse for a schoolgirl in Zambia. The purse is filled with re-usable feminine hygiene supplies made by those employed in Zambia by Sew Powerful. The girl receives the purse and supplies in her health training class to enable her to attend school all month and improve her academic performance. With Chris' instruction, you will learn to sew the cross-body purse from the free pattern provided by Sew Powerful. Your bag created will be donated to Sew Powerful! You will learn the skills to make this bag and you can contribute to this wonderful organization by helping them achieve their 2022 goal of collecting and distributing 24,000 purses. All materials included.

Open Sew–Open Sew is a time for you to come together to enjoy sewing on your own projects in The Sewing Labs. Bring your sewing machine or use ours (first come, first serve). Use our tools & stash to practice your skills or start a project or bring your own project to work. NO INSTRUCTION IS OFFERED - YOU MUST HAVE SEWING EXPERIENCE! but, volunteers are available for simple help. Domestic machines are available - NO Industrial machines offered.

Longarm Quilt Operator Training - learn to operate the Gammill Statler Stitcher or Gammill Class Stitch Regulated Free Motion machine. This course is required if you want to rent our machines.

Basic Sewing - Phase 1 - This course if for a beginner who has never sewn before or for someone who has not sewn for awhile and needs a refresher course. You will learn to operate a domestic sewing machine including threading, basic operation and safety & maintenance. You will also learn the tools of the trade and more while making some simple projects & a tool caddy. Each week you will learn a new skill and you will have home practice work to complete. At the end of this course you can earn a certification thru testing. This course is also part of our Sewing Salon program - for employment, entrepreneurship and enrichment.
This course will be lead by Cali Roberta on Saturdays & Robert Lackie - on week days -Classroom Instructors for Domestic machine.
All materials and supplies are included with this course. You can use our machines & tools or bring your own to learn with.

Garment Construction Fundamentals is Part 2 of Garments @ The Sewing Labs. This course introduces sleeve types; raglan vs.. set - in, collars & cuffs; Waistbands; casing with elastic, linings and more.
Learn the sewing vocabulary terms and make samples of these fundamental elements for future reference.
Make a pant/skirt and sample top

This is a one session orientation training which will give you an overview of the mission of The Sewing Labs and how you can serve as a volunteer.
Orientation will cover;
* Mission of TSL
* Opportunities for volunteers from the classroom to community to boardroom
* Rules of operation and safety precautions for everyone in the program and more.
We want you to do what your heart & hands love.
Even if you just want to find out more before deciding to volunteer. This is a great opportunity to explore what The Sewing Labs is all about.
All volunteers are expected to go thru an orientation within the first 90 days of service Pre-registration is requested.
Guest Educator and YLAI Fellow, Fran Gajardo from Chile will guide you through a fun project using your fabric scraps.
This is an exclusive workshop only held once before Fran returns to Chile
Fran is an innovative clothing designer using repurposed clothing to recreate fashion and accessories.
Sustainability is her initiative and she will show your unique projects to do with your scrap pile.
Workshop 3: Scrappy Exploration
- For this workshop, the students will be recycling the fabric scraps of TSL to create a tote bag. In one session they will learn basic creative sewing and patchwork to design and create their own sustainable and recycled tote bag. The students are welcome to bring fabric scraps from their homes if they have, or unwanted damaged clothes they would like to include in their project.
A basic understanding of sewing is helpful but not required.

Basic Sewing – Phase 1 Part 2 – Building on the skills learned in Part 1 or start where you are.
You will learn seams and seam finishes and then apply this to simple projects.
Learn hems types while making an apron and finally learn buttonholes, hook and snap closures.
Earn a certification thru testing, if wanted. All materials provided. (Sewing Machine Operation or Basic Sewing Part 1 required)

Workshop 2: Simple Garment Deconstruction
- This workshop consists of the deconstruction of a pair of pants. We will explore the reinterpretation of the body through the multiple possibilities of what a pair of pants can become. In one sewing session, we will reconstruct these pants and design/sew a Top. The student can bring up to 3 pairs of pants they no longer use.
A basic understanding of sewing is helpful but not required.
