Open Stitch Fridays - This is a time for you to come together to stitch. Bring your own projects of sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, weaving, embroidery, other fiber arts to work on. You can use our stash, our domestic sewing machines, tools etc. NO instruction is offered but, there just might be someone else in the room to ask.
Domestic Machines are available - NO Industrial machines offered.

The Sewing Labs is a Registered Apprenticeship Training Operation with the Missouri Department of Labor and the United States Department of Labor. Student who complete this Apprenticeship program will receive multiple certificates including The Sewing Labs Certificate in Domestic Sewing Skills, Certificate in Industrial Sewing Skills and the US DOL Certificate of Apprenticeship. Each of these certificates represent a significate accomplishment by the student and a great addition to their resume whether they will become a employee or an entrepreneur.
You will learn the fundamentals of the craft of sewing, Industrial productions methods and participate in site tours to local businesses who are actively seeking to hire Industrial Sewing Machine Operators. A tool kit is provided. Participants must participant in an entrance interview & assessment to be accepted into the program.

Basic Sewing – Phase 1 Part 2 – Building on the skills learned in Part 1 or start where you are.
You will learn seams and seam finishes and then apply this to simple projects.
Learn hems types while making an apron and finally learn buttonholes, hook and snap closures.
Earn a certification thru testing, if wanted. All materials provided. (Sewing Machine Operation or Basic Sewing Part 1 required)

Join us for a Clothes Swap - Hosted by Fashion Tech KC at The Sewing Labs 5:30 -
Bring minimum of 3 up to 10 garments to include in the swap - Each participant will get an opportunity to "shop" the inventory of clothes brought in to share. Clothes should be clean and in Good condition. Women's clothing is the primary focus.

Serger Workshop - Serger Basics - Learn how to use a serger.
Bring your own serger to add to your skills or use ours
This class covers basic serger sewing. Proper Threading and maintenance, thread tension and understanding serger features. Participants of this class will create a workbook with samples of stitches, mastering curves on your serger, creating special hems and more.

Intro to Garments - This course takes you from Basic Sewing into Garment Elements and Construction. You will be introduced to patterns, fabric & fiber types. You will learn to decipher sewing vocabulary gaining understanding and making samples of facings & linings, curved seams and corners, darts, tucks and gathers. You will learn the proper way to cut out a garment while making a simple top. This course involves a lot of sewing and sewing homework to assure your success.
Course consists of 10 weeks of 2.5 hour sessions

Not the geese you see in the sky but a classic quilting block that is used frequently in quilting. Students will learn three ways to make this block and how to adjust the size. Fabric will be provided and finished blocks will contribute to a Community Quilt Project with Flying Geese.

Intro to Garments - This course takes you from Basic Sewing into Garment Elements and Construction. You will be introduced to patterns, fabric & fiber types. You will learn the proper way to cut out a garment while making a simple top. This course involves a lot of sewing and sewing homework to assure your success.

SEW POWERFUL PURSE taught by Chris McMullen – Sew Powerful, a non-profit organization, asks seamstresses from around the world to make and donate a purse for a schoolgirl in Zambia. The purse is filled with re-usable feminine hygiene supplies made by those employed in Zambia by Sew Powerful. The girl receives the purse and supplies in her health training class to enable her to attend school all month and improve her academic performance. With Chris' instruction, you will learn to sew the cross-body purse from the free pattern provided by Sew Powerful. Your bag created will be donated to Sew Powerful! You will learn the skills to make this bag and you can contribute to this wonderful organization by helping them achieve their 2022 goal of collecting and distributing 24,000 purses. All materials included.

Open Stitch Fridays - This is a time for you to come together to stitch. Bring your own projects of sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, weaving, embroidery, other fiber arts to work on. To rent a machine you must first attend a Longarm Quilt Machine Operator Training. These classes are generally offered each month. Seats are limited - check our class schedule on the website.
Once you have taken the Operator Training - and been approved to now quilt yourself you can Rent the Longarm machines.

* $15 for each additional hour - time charged in 15m increments

Learn to construct home décor pillows -
This class will teach you to cutting techniques and sewing tips to make the perfect pillow for your home. You will learn from the professional, tips of cutting your fabrics to create matching pillows. You will learn how to do a hidden zipper installation. watch a demonstration on how to create a variety of edges; self-corded, flange, ruffled and knife edge. You will make cording from pillow fabrics so that you will always have a perfect match. You will construct one (1) pillow during class and make several trim samples.

7th Annual Gratitude & Grace Quilt Retreat - July 29th, 30 & 31st
Be a Member of our Gratitude & Grace Quilt group. We are very excited about this friend-raiser, a quilting retreat. Join our kindred spirit group of sharing/learning the art of quilting. This year's quilt pattern is “Starstruck” by Missouri Star Quilt Company
What to Expect:
We currently do not offer overnight stay - hotel reservation information is available for local stay.
Friday Night – Doors open & check in starting @ 5 pm. Gathering starts @ 6 pm. We will gather to get to know each other.
Participate in Sew-N-Tell and have a round table talk. Set-up sewing stations. Quilt Pattern & fabrics will be distributed. Snacks served.
Saturday – Doors open @ 7:30 am Continental Breakfast available @ 8– 8:30am 7:30 am – Morning Yoga session – Optional. Sewing Room rules & overview explained. Finish sewing Station set up & overview of quilt design explained. Cutting instructions and off we go!!!! Lunch break @ 12 noon – serving thru 1pm. Sewing throughout the day, Dinner served @ 5- 6 pm. Trunk show of a selected designer will be following dinner @ approximately 7 pm for those who want to participate. Sewing room is open until 10 pm.

Sunday – Door open @ 8 am Continental Breakfast available from 8 - 8:30am. Sewing & sewing throughout the day. Quick Tips lesson @ 11 am. Roundtable focusing on Gratitude during lunch. Lunch served 12-1. Finishing up & preparing to leave by 2 pm.
Snacks – We encourage you to bring a snack to share with the group – these snacks will be available at all times in the Community Center Kitchen area.
**Children are not allowed at the retreat – Age limit – 13 & beyond. Young sewers must be making a quilt and have prior sewing experience & be accompanied with an adult.

Open Stitch Fridays - This is a time for you to come together to stitch. Bring your own projects of sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, weaving, embroidery, other fiber arts to work on. You can use our stash, our domestic sewing machines, tools etc. NO instruction is offered but, there just might be someone else in the room to ask.
Domestic Machines are available - NO Industrial machines offered.
Event occurs most Fridays from 10-3
FREE to the public - ages 10 - beyond (children under 13 must be accompanies by an adult and be working on project)
