Need a little help with a sewing project? Embarking out into uncharted sewing territory and want some support? Join the Independent Projects Lab! Come work on your own project in a supportive group and under the guidance of a professional sewist. Bring your own pattern and fabric and let’s get sewing!

The Projects Labs allows you to work on your own sewing projects under the mentoring of a professional sewist.
Pre-requisite - Basic Sewing skills and knowledge required - this is not a fundamentals skills class - this class allows you to take your skills and expand your sewing projects.
Participants sign up for 1 session or a block of 6 sessions at a time. ( this is the average time required to complete a garment )

Embroidery Machine Operator Training - learn to operate the Baby Lock Venture 10-needle embroidery machine. This course is required if you want to rent the machine.

- To hoop your projects
-How to choose the right stabilizer
-How to choose the proper needles and threads
-Basic Operation of the BabyLock Venture
-Selecting from built-in designs
- Importing designs from other sources.

To rent a machine you must first attend a Longarm Quilt Machine Operator Training. These classes are generally offered each month. Seats are limited - check our class schedule on the website.

Intro to Garments - This course takes you from Basic Sewing into Garment Elements and Construction. You will be introduced to patterns, fabric & fiber types. You will learn to decipher sewing vocabulary gaining understanding and making samples of facings & linings, curved seams and corners, darts, tucks and gathers. You will learn the proper way to cut out a garment while making a simple top. This course involves a lot of sewing and sewing homework to assure your success. Basic Sewing Machine skills are required or take Basic Sewing Part 1 @ TSL

Master Quilting Techniques - Paper Piecing
Lean the method of paper foundation piecing to create a fun "LOVE" quilt block. Your instructor, Annette Hossman teaches you this technique using paper to stablize the quilt block allowin for small detailed pieces.

Intro to Garments - This course takes you from Basic Sewing into Garment Elements and Construction. You will be introduced to patterns, fabric & fiber types. You will learn to decipher sewing vocabulary gaining understanding and making samples of facings & linings, curved seams and corners, darts, tucks and gathers. You will learn the proper way to cut out a garment while making a simple top. This course involves a lot of sewing and sewing homework to assure your success. Basic Sewing Machine skills are required or take Basic Sewing Part 1 @ TSL
Course consists of 10 weeks of 2.5 hour sessions
All materials included with course - you can choose fabric for top from our stash or provide your own. More information will be given during course.

Basic Sewing – Part 2 – Building on the skills learned in Part 1
You will learn seams and seam finishes and then apply this to simple projects.

Drapery - LIned Single Flat Panel with rod pocket
You will make a sample panel to learn the construction process. You will learn all the elements that go into this panel including proper measuring, lining, hems, rod pocket and more.
Robert Lackie, our veteran Home Decor designer sewist is leading this class.
You will use our fabric stash to create sample. Then you can transfer these skills onto your own fabrics.

Master Quilting Techniques - Paper Piecing
Lean the method of paper foundation piecing to create a fun "LOVE" quilt block. Your instructor, Annette Hossman teaches you this technique using paper to stablize the quilt block allowin for small detailed pieces.

The Sewing Labs is a Registered Apprenticeship Host and Training with the United States and Missouri Department of Labor.
Sewists who complete this Apprenticeship program will receive multiple certificates including The Sewing Labs Certificate in Domestic Sewing Skills, Certificate in Industrial Sewing Skills and the US DOL Certificate of Apprenticeship. Each of these certificates represent a significate accomplishment by the student and a great addition to their resume whether they will become a employee or an entrepreneur.

This class covers basic serger sewing. Proper Threading and maintenance, thread tension and understanding serger features. Participants of this class will create a workbook with samples of stitches, mastering curves on your serger, creating special hems and more.

SEW POWERFUL PURSE taught by Chris McMullen – Sew Powerful, a non-profit organization, asks seamstresses from around the world to make and donate a purse for a schoolgirl in Zambia. The purse is filled with re-usable feminine hygiene supplies made by those employed in Zambia by Sew Powerful. The girl receives the purse and supplies in her health training class to enable her to attend school all month and improve her academic performance. With Chris' instruction, you will learn to sew the cross-body purse from the free pattern provided by Sew Powerful. Your bag created will be donated to Sew Powerful! You will learn the skills to make this bag and you can contribute to this wonderful organization by helping them achieve their 2022 goal of collecting and distributing 24,000 purses. All materials included.

This is a one session orientation training which will give you an overview of the mission of The Sewing Labs and how you can serve as a volunteer.
Orientation will cover;
* Mission of TSL
* Opportunities for volunteers from the classroom to community to boardroom
* Rules of operation and safety precautions for everyone in the program and more.
We want you to do what your heart & hands love.
Even if you just want to find out more before deciding to volunteer. This is a great opportunity to explore what The Sewing Labs is all about.

Rent a Longarm Quilting Machine to Quilt yourself!
To rent a machine you must first attend a Longarm Quilt Machine Operator Training. These classes are generally offered each month. Seats are limited - check our class schedule on the website.
Once you have taken the Operator Training - and been approved to now quilt yourself you can Rent the Longarm machines.
Machine Rental Fees
* Block of 2 hours = $50 minimum
* $20 for each additional hour - time charged in 15m increments
* Fee does not include batting, backing or binding - batting can be purchased for $8 per yd.

Independent Projects Lab:
Need a little help with a sewing project? Embarking out into uncharted sewing territory and want some support? Join the Independent Projects Lab! Come work on your own project in a supportive group and under the guidance of a professional sewist. Bring your own pattern and fabric and let’s get sewing!
Lead by Heather Anacker
The Projects Labs allows you to work on your own sewing projects under the mentoring of a professional sewist.
Pre-requisite - Basic Sewing skills and knowledge required - this is not a fundamentals skills class - this class allows you to take your skills and expand your sewing projects.
Participants sign up for 1 session or a block of 6 sessions at a time. ( this is the average time required to complete a garment )
Fee $25 per sesson or 6 sessions for $ 145
You can continue to add more blocks of time as needed.
Since this is an Independent Project Labs - you can start any week.

Sewing Empowerment:
This class will empower you to use a sewing machine safely and with confidence. Bring your own sewing machine, or use one of ours. Students in this class will learn how to sew a simple apron, as well as how to properly thread a sewing machine and how to troubleshoot common problems. If you have never sewn before and want to learn how, or if you need a boost in your sewing confidence, this class is for you!
