Basic Sewing - Phase 1 - This course if for a beginner who has never sewn before or for someone who has not sewn for awhile and needs a refresher course. You will learn to operate a domestic sewing machine including threading, basic operation and safety & maintenance. You will also learn the tools of the trade and more while making some simple projects & a tool caddy. Each week you will learn a new skill and you will have home practice work to complete.

Prepare yourself for employment or entrepreneurship in the profession of sewing.
The Sewing Salon Training Program @ The Sewing Labs is a 20 month program with a commitment of 8 months of hands-on sewing instruction on both domestic and industrial machines and entrepreneurial business training to support you and an Apprenticeship Program with a local Kansas City Business for the remaining 12 month or until you reach 2000 hours On The Job. The Sewing Labs is a Registered Apprenticeship Host and Training with the United States and Missouri Department of Labor.

Sewists who complete this Apprenticeship program will receive multiple certificates including The Sewing Labs Certificate in Domestic Sewing Skills, Certificate in Industrial Sewing Skills and the US DOL Certificate of Apprenticeship. Each of these certificates represent a significate accomplishment by the student and a great addition to their resume whether they will become a employee or an entrepreneur.

Salon Program Includes:
* Instruction in the core fundamentals of sewing. Techniques in Mearsuring, Marking, Cutting and Construction
* Industrial productions method
* Site tours of local businesses who are actively seeking to hire Industrial Sewing Machine Operators
* Multiple tools kits: Domestic tool kit, Rotary Cutting Kit, Industrial Add on Kit, Reference Book and handouts.
* Participants will be expected to complete in-class work, lab work, portfolio of work samples, testing and work evaluations.

Participants must participant in an entrance interview & assessment to be accepted into the program.
Limited Scholarships are available.

How to make Welt Cording for Pillows
You will be excited to take this class or the series of classes on edging techniques for Home Decor Pillows.
Learn from Robert Lackie, a veteran professional home decor designer and sewist.
He will teach you the tips & tricks of making trim applications for Home Decor pillows and concluding with a 2 part class to make your own pillows using one of the trim techniques.

This class covers basic serger sewing. Proper Threading and maintenance, thread tension and understanding serger features. Participants of this class will create a workbook with samples of stitches, mastering curves on your serger, creating special hems and more.

Independent Projects Lab:
Need a little help with a sewing project? Embarking out into uncharted sewing territory and want some support? Join the Independent Projects Lab! Come work on your own project in a supportive group and under the guidance of a professional sewist. Bring your own pattern and fabric and let’s get sewing!
Lead by Heather Anacker

The Projects Labs allows you to work on your own sewing projects under the mentoring of a professional sewist.
Pre-requisite - Basic Sewing skills and knowledge required - this is not a fundamentals skills class - this class allows you to take your skills and expand your sewing projects.
Participants sign up for 1 session or a block of 6 sessions at a time. ( this is the average time required to complete a garment )
Fee $25 per sesson or 6 sessions for $ 145
You can continue to add more blocks of time as needed.
Since this is an Independent Project Labs - you can start any week.

Embroidery Machine Operator Training - learn to operate the Baby Lock Venture 10-needle embroidery machine. This course is required if you want to rent the machine.

You will learn:
- To hoop your projects
-How to choose the right stabilizer
-How to choose the proper needles and threads
-Basic Operation of the BabyLock Venture
-Selecting from built-in designs
- Importing designs from other sources.
-Tips, Tricks & recommendations

What to Bring to Class:

-Face Mask - if desired
- A willingness to learn and make mistakes
-Bring snack if wanted

* You will learn on practice fabric - you can bring a small item to add a simple embellishment, but it may or may not be used for instruction, depending on the time and complexity of the project.

Open Stitch Fridays - This is a time for you to come together to stitch. Bring your own projects of sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, weaving, embroidery, other fiber arts to work on. You can use our stash, our domestic sewing machines, tools etc. NO instruction is offered but, there just might be someone else in the room to ask.
Domestic Machines are available - NO Industrial machines offered.

Event occurs most Fridays from 10-3
FREE to the public - ages 10 - beyond (children under 13 must be accompanies by an adult and be working on project)

To rent a machine you must first attend a Longarm Quilt Machine Operator Training. These classes are generally offered each month. Seats are limited - check our class schedule on the website.

Once you have taken the Operator Training - and been approved to now quilt yourself you can Rent the Longarm machines.
Machine Rental Fees
* Block of 2 hours = $50 minimum
* $20 for each additional hour - time charged in 15m increments
* Fee does not include batting, backing or binding - batting can be purchased for $8 per yd.
* All rental times require pre-registration - NO drop ins!

You will learn seams and seam finishes and then apply this to simple projects.
Learn hems types while making an apron
Learn zipper basics and finally learn buttonholes, hook and snap closures.

9 sessions of 2.5 hrs. Fee $270

Master Quilting Techniques - English Paper Piecing
English Paper piecing is a patchwork method where fabric is wrapped around a heavy paper to stablize while stitch together the paper is removed. This allow you to create an intricate design. Usually stitched by hand. Your instructor, Annette Hossman teaches you this technique

2 sessions 2 hours each. Fee $45

Drapery - LIned Single Flat Panel with rod pocket
You will make a sample panel to learn the construction process. You will learn all the elements that go into this panel including proper measuring, lining, hems, rod pocket and more.
Robert Lackie, our veteran Home Decor designer sewist is leading this class.
You will use our fabric stash to create sample. Then you can transfer these skills onto your own fabrics.

This is a 2/3 session class
Cost = $100

The Projects Labs allows you to work on your own sewing projects under the mentoring of a professional sewist.
Pre-requisite - Basic Sewing skills and knowledge required - this is not a fundamentals skills class - this class allows you to take your skills and expand your sewing projects.
Participants sign up for 1 session or a block of 6 sessions at a time. ( this is the average time required to complete a garment )

SEW POWERFUL PURSE taught by Chris McMullen – Sew Powerful, a non-profit organization, asks seamstresses from around the world to make and donate a purse for a schoolgirl in Zambia. The purse is filled with re-usable feminine hygiene supplies made by those employed in Zambia by Sew Powerful. The girl receives the purse and supplies in her health training class to enable her to attend school all month and improve her academic performance. With Chris' instruction, you will learn to sew the cross-body purse from the free pattern provided by Sew Powerful. Your bag created will be donated to Sew Powerful! You will learn the skills to make this bag and you can contribute to this wonderful organization by helping them achieve their 2022 goal of collecting and distributing 24,000 purses. All materials included.

Reserve your seat for the 2023 Gratitude & Grace Quilt Retreat scheduled for July 28 - 30. This year pattern is "Star Trails" by a bright corner. The quilt top size is 60" x 75". You will have a choice of jelly rolls and coordinating solids and prints. This is a quick strip piecing technique so that the rows will come together in a jiffy.

The Sewing Salon Training Program @ The Sewing Labs is a 20 month program with a commitment of 8 months of hands-on sewing instruction on both domestic and industrial machines and entrepreneurial business training to support you and an Apprenticeship Program with a local Kansas City Business for the remaining 12 month or until you reach 2000 hours On The Job. The Sewing Labs is a Registered Apprenticeship Host and Training with the United States and Missouri Department of Labor.

Sewists who complete this Apprenticeship program will receive multiple certificates including The Sewing Labs Certificate in Domestic Sewing Skills, Certificate in Industrial Sewing Skills and the US DOL Certificate of Apprenticeship. Each of these certificates represent a significate accomplishment by the student and a great addition to their resume whether they will become a employee or an entrepreneur.

Salon Program Includes:
* Instruction in the core fundamentals of sewing. Techniques in Mearsuring, Marking, Cutting and Construction
* Industrial productions method
* Site tours of local businesses who are actively seeking to hire Industrial Sewing Machine Operators
* Multiple tools kits: Domestic tool kit, Rotary Cutting Kit, Industrial Add on Kit, Reference Book and handouts.
* Participants will be expected to complete in-class work, lab work, portfolio of work samples, testing and work evaluations.

Participants must participant in an entrance interview & assessment to be accepted into the program.
Limited Scholarships are available.
